Joe Biden’s decision on Sunday to withdraw from the presidential race—as dramatic an event American politics has seen since Richard Nixon’s 1974 resignation from the presidency—illuminates a crucial divide between the two major political parties. Nixon himself provides a useful marker for how radically the Republicans have been transformed under Trump.
