Once again, one of our local politicians, in concert with her party, has acted to cut voters out of the electoral process.

Crystal Peoples-Stokes was up for re-election this November for her seat representing the 141st Assembly District, which covers much of the city’s East Side and portions of downtown, Elmwood Village and North Buffalo. By declaring her intention to run again she discouraged potential challengers and none stepped forward during the recently completed petitioning process to qualify to get on the ballot.

No Democrat. No Republican. Nobody.

Peoples-Stokes was alone in filing nominating petitions, which she did Monday. The next day, she announced she was not running, citing a medical condition that she refused to specify.

Her withdrawal leaves the decision on who to run on the Democratic Party line to a committee that Peoples-Stokes herself has designated. She in turn has stated her preference for Leah Halton-Pope, a former member of her staff who now represents the Ellicott District on the Common Council. So Assembly Member Leah Halton-Pope it will be.

“This is not how elections should work and it is another example of why the public is sick of politics as usual,” Paul Wolf, founder of New York Coalition for Open Government, told Geoff Kelly in his analysis of the situation.

There’s more to the story.
